Joseph Marie Vien

Joseph Marie Vien is a French neoclassical painter who was born in Montpellier in 1716.

The main courtyard of the Musée Fabre has been named "Cour Vien." The Cour Vien is accessible to the general public during the "Journées du Patrimoine" at the beginning of September only.

It is a very beautiful courtyard. I don't know whom the very gracious statue represents but I will inquire....

A strange pedestal pays homage to Joseph Marie Vien. To make sure that visitors will understand that Vien was an important man, the sculptor has carved "Artiste célèbre" in the pedestal, which I found funny and sort of redundant.

I really liked the reflections in the fountain (basin?) level with the ground.

La cour d'honneur du musée Fabre a été baptisée "Cour Vien". La Cour Vien n'est accessible au public que pendant les journées du Patrimoine début septembre.

La cour est très belle. Je ne sais pas qui la statue représente mais je vais me renseigner.

Un étrange piédestal rend homme à Joseph Marie Vien. Pour s'assurer que les visiteurs allaient se rendre compte que Vien était un homme important, le sculpteur a gravé "Artiste célèbre" dans la pierre du piédestal, ce que j'ai trouvé amusant et un peu redondant.

J'ai beaucoup aimé les reflets dans la fontaine (bassin?) qui se trouve au niveau du sol.

Journées du Patrimoine

This weekend was "Le week-end du Patrimoine" in France. Lots of places that are not accessible during the year opened their doors to the general public last Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday I was at the museum almost all day, which is not very original. I attended a concert at the cathedral in the early evening and then I discovered a wonderful red wine (Côteaux du Languedoc, Vallat, sold in "cubitainers" at Champion - this is for Bergson :-)) at my friend Mireille's.

Yesterday I went with Mireille to "Le Château d'O" where the président du Conseil Général had invited all new Héraultais to a big party (with next year's election in view, of course).

The pinède (pinewood) was crowded. I photographed the tables when the attendance were listening to the politicians. The sky above the pinède was a bit grey but the sun was shining bright in the amphitheater. A sign from heaven for the candidates?

You will notice that there is only one lady on the stage.


Ce week-end, c'était le week-end du Patrimoine en France. Des tas d'endroits qui ne sont pas accessibles pendant l'année ont ouvert leurs portes au public samedi et dimanche.

Samedi j'ai passé presque toute la journée au musée, ce qui n'est pas très original. J'ai assisté à un concert à la cathédrale en début de soirée, et ensuite j'ai découvert un merveilleux vin rouge chez mon amie Mireille.

Hier je suis allée avec Mireille au Château d'O où le président du Conseil Général de l'Hérault avait invité tous les nouveaux Héraultais à une grande fête (en pensant un peu à l'élection de l'an prochain).

La pinède était noire de monde. J'ai photographié les tables quand l'assistance écoutait les politiciens. Le ciel par-dessus la pinède était un peu gris mais le soleil brillait de tous ses rayons au-dessus de l'amphithéâtre. Un signe du ciel pour les politiciens?

Vous remarquerez qu'il n'y a qu'une seule femme sur la scène.
