THE FRONT FACE

Blue sky and nice weather above the médiathèque Zola and Bacchus/Dionysos without the little guy, who has been left behind, with a human arm on the right-hand side (of the stand) of the statue.

Le recto de la statue de Dionysos à Antigone. Le petit berger et son baton sont restés derrière mais semblent intéresser la personne à qui appartient le bras à droite du socle de la statue. La photo date d'avant-hier. Je parlais avec trois personnes de Washington, DC. On nous a demandé poliment de nous écarter parce qu'on tournait une publicité à quelques mètres de nous.

Weekend Reflections..... Bacchus

Bacchus, god of wine, facing so much chlorinated water.... The statue has been installed between the olympic swimming-pool and the main public library in Montpellier.

Mais qui est donc le jeune enfant qui se tient derrière le dieu païen, le regard tourné vers la bibliothèque, représentant la connaissance, tandis que le dieu du vin, Bacchus, semble vouloir par sa musique garder l'eau à bonne distance, tel un charmeur de serpent.

Aparences, avec un seul p, est un bien charmant site que je viens de découvrir en cherchant l'identité de cet enfant et sur lequel on passerait des heures  !

Disappearance

I photographed this statue before the Maison des Syndicats (House of Trade Unions) in last January. Since then, the statue has vanished. Where is it? Has it been stolen? The pedestal is still there. An olive tree in a pot from Anduze has recently replaced the statue.

J'ai photographié cette statue devant la Maison des Syndicats (qui doit être très fréquentée en ce moment) en janvier dernier. Depuis, elle a disparu. La stèle est toujours là et tout près on a ajouté un olivier dans un beau pot d'Anduze. A-t-elle été volée ou saccagée ?

The cherub and the lion

I like this statue of a cherub and a lion, which seem to be guarding the Jardins du Peyrou. Usually cherubs are obese but this one is handsome and almost thin. The lion looks young and powerful. I thought the statue dated to Louis 14th's time but actually it was made by sculptor Injalbert in the 19th century and was installed in le Peyrou in 1883. Its name is "L'Amour domptant la Force (love taming strength). On the other side of the gate, there is another statue called La Force domptant l'Amour (strength taming love). I need to photograph the second statue.

By the way, in France, "young lions" are younger socialist leaders, whereas those of the previous generation are called "elephants." The lions want to drive the elephants away from their positions, but the elephants stick to them. I don't think French right-wing politicians are compared to animals...
