Old Wall

Call me silly, but I like old walls and old doors much better than new concrete walls and plastic doors, despite all their wounds and the wrinkles left by the passage of time. Every broken stone, every scratch in the painting of the door, everything has a story to tell. This old door on which a sign has been nailed (costumes de carnaval for rent here) is on the side of the "cazerne des troupes" shown in the former post. I found that rather unexpected: carnival costumes versus military uniforms....

Même si ces murs sont tout vieux et tout branlants, je les aime bien mieux que les portes et les murs des immeubles modernes. Ah l'affreux béton et l'horrible plastique. Chaque pierre abîmée, chaque rayure dans la vieille porte, chaque changement de couleur dans la peinture usée, a une histoire à raconter. Voyez cette porte d'entrée sur laquelle on a cloué un signe indiquant "location de costumes de carnaval". Inattendu et paradoxal dans ce lieu, le flanc de l'ancienne "cazerne des troupes" montrée dans le post précédent. On a remplacé les uniformes militaires datant de Louis XIV par des déguisements......

Cazernes des Troupes

In Le Cailar, a small town in the Gard department, the town hall is located in a "cazerne" dating back to the 18th century (at least). Most houses and monuments there have remained as they were originally as Le Cailar is still isolated: no major road runs through the heart of the town.

Cette photo n'est sans doute pas la plus gracieuse des photos que j'ai postées sur ce blog, et n'est pas une photo de Montpellier mais je la trouve très précieuse. Ce bâtiment fut construit sous Louis XIV pour loger les troupes du roi. Si les pierres ont vieilli, elles n'ont pas été entamées pour plaire aux contemporains.

Furetière, qui bien entendu tenait déjà un blog en 1690, donne une définition du mot CAZERNE (dont le z a été remplacé par un s depuis).

La vieille bâtisse abrite maintenant la mairie d'un village du Gard, Le Cailar. Ce village a la chance de ne pas être traversé pour accéder à une ville plus importante. Il faut y aller exprès. C'est son isolement qui l'a protégé des promoteurs sans scrupules. Puissent le ciel et Louis XIV qui s'y trouve depuis belle lurette aider à sa préservation.

Je me demande où j'étais quand j'ai pris cette photo. En principe, les piétons ne doivent pas se trouver là, pas plus que les cyclistes, et la circulation des voitures sur cette bretelle ne permet pas aux conducteurs de s'arrêter pour photographier l'environnement.... 

J'ai une pensée pour toutes les personnes qui ont péri ces derniers jours dans les "accidents" de train, d'avion, de bus, et en particulier je pense aux pélerins.... 

Sky Watch Friday..... Arc de Triomphe.

The sky was very blue and there was not a breath of air: look at the flag on the roof of the Arc de Triomphe, one of the most famous monuments in Montpellier. And no car in sight!

Ciel bleu et pas un souffle d'air à Montpellier, la dernière fois où j'ai fait du vélo (pour me rendre à mon rendez-vous chez l'anesthésiste) il y a une dizaine de jours. Pauvre petit drapeau français qui semble tout penaud et tout ratatiné sur cet imposant édifice à la gloire du Roi Soleil.

Trees and sun

I didn't take these photos in Montpellier but in Villeneuvette, one of the jewels of Languedoc. Villeneuvette dates to Louis 14th. There was a "manufacture royale" there.

I like the reflections of the sun and the trees on the houses (not in the lens of my camera though). The residents are very "jealous" of their little city.

The cherub and the lion

I like this statue of a cherub and a lion, which seem to be guarding the Jardins du Peyrou. Usually cherubs are obese but this one is handsome and almost thin. The lion looks young and powerful. I thought the statue dated to Louis 14th's time but actually it was made by sculptor Injalbert in the 19th century and was installed in le Peyrou in 1883. Its name is "L'Amour domptant la Force (love taming strength). On the other side of the gate, there is another statue called La Force domptant l'Amour (strength taming love). I need to photograph the second statue.

By the way, in France, "young lions" are younger socialist leaders, whereas those of the previous generation are called "elephants." The lions want to drive the elephants away from their positions, but the elephants stick to them. I don't think French right-wing politicians are compared to animals...
