Do you like concrete ? I don't.
This is the headquarters of our "regional government", where all the decisions regarding the region are made.... It is located at the far end of the new part of the city, called Antigone. It is not made of stone but of concrete and glass.
It was built about fifteen years ago by the then mayor of Montpellier, Georges Frêche, who wanted to become "président de la région Languedoc-Roussillon." But he lost the election, therefore it was his opponent who benefited from the magnificent Arch of Triumph that had not been erected for him. Jacques Blanc (James White in English :-)) was "king" for five years.
On the last election though, Frêche won, and since then we have had a socialist king in this wealthy palace :-)
It is very difficult to take photos of the Hôtel de Région as the area around it is almost constantly crowded. I was very lucky yesterday.
That is quite a monument to...errr, local sovereignty! Actually, I like the bold vision.
RépondreSupprimerNever mind the building -- what has happend to the angel's head?
RépondreSupprimerDear Mandy, the angel is the Winged Victory of Samothrace

But it is an angel. I wonder why they called the statue that way. I need to read Wikipedia too :-))
Especially socialist sovereignty, Sally. You would expect more "modesty" from them :-))

RépondreSupprimerLol, socialists still like to see their grand edifices. Exhibit #1: Monsier le President (ancien), M Mitterand!!!
RépondreSupprimergosh that's a brutal building.
RépondreSupprimerIt looks very very large! Nice shot of the building! I love all your pictures and comentary.
RépondreSupprimerThe glass version of L'Arc de Triomphe looks great! And now I see I don't really need to visit Paris to see the goddess Nike.;)
RépondreSupprimerThis is very interesting. I am getting to know Montpellier a little better. I think that this building overlooks the Médiathèque Emile Zola. If you read carefully, my text today (28 Juillet, in French), you will see a little clue.
