The Ephebes

The Ephebes is the name that has been given to the three statues that support the upper part of the fountain on the Place de Thèbes, in Antigone. I do not know why but the ephebes have always sort of frightened me. Formerly they were in a long, narrow fountain on the Place de la Comédie, which stretched out lengthways. I remember when I passed along them at night I made a point of not looking in their direction.

Are there places where you feel ill at ease as I do when I am near these statues? I really do not understand why they have that effect on me.

I could not photograph the third ephebe as the statue was against the light.

  1. I often feel ill at ease around areas of abandoned industrial buildings. Montpellier is a beautiful city.

Thank you, gmg. Cabacurl, I feel the same around abandoned places.

  5. I am surprised the statues frighten you. Maybe you have had a nightmare about something similar. I am afraid of falling off a cliff and worry about that when I am near cliffs. I like your photograph.

If you visited my blog yesterday and left a comment about our 52nd wedding anniversary, I wanted to say, "Thanks."

  6. I don't get that effect with statues but with some places I do. Depending on the area and at night it's just a little scarier. Maybe it's their eyes that effect you.

  8. Good afternoon Marie,
Thanks for your visit. No the story about Mildred and George is not a true story that I am aware of. Someone had sent it to me as a joke and I looked on the internet for a photo of an old truck and added to the joke. But have you ever met someone who might be nosey like old Mildred and wished someone would play that kind of joke on her to put her in her place. Thanks for your comment.

The statues would probably give me an eery feeling, if I had to walk past them at night and the light in the area is not to good, they would probably look more like a real person standing there. Plus these look very stern and rather harsh.

I don't like old basements or any kind of old abandoned building. I can imagine all sorts of bad things that might have happened there.

    Have a wonderful week-end.

  11. It is interesting how certain places make us feel uneasy - I too have that feeling at times.
When I was a chld there was a house that had been badly burnt in our town. Whenever my sister and I passed it we would always yell "DEAD HOUSE" and lie down on the seat of the car - much to my parents annoyance!!! We were really frightened of it. The whole family were all very relieved when it was rennovated.

  12. Marie: It may be the smell coming from his underarm that makes you feel uneasy...((sorry...that was not funny)) Just the first thought that came to my mind when I saw the one statue!!!
