Galette des rois
Do you celebrate the Epiphany in your country? Here in France, we are supposed to celebrate it on January 6th but actually we eat the galette des rois until the end of January.
In the South, we eat "la couronne des Rois" (the Wise Men's crown), whereas in northern France, they eat a "galette à la frangipane" (almond paste). I live in the South but I was born in the North. I tend to find the galette à la frangipane better.
Yesterday I ate "la galette" with the members of an association called "Les Amis de la Mémoire Pédagoqique" (they are working on a new website, I will mention it on my blog as soon as it is online). My friend Ada was crowned queen!
A website on la galette à la frangipane...
A page on la couronne...

No, Marie, we do not celebrate Epiphany much, down under.
RépondreSupprimerThe Anglican Church celebrates at evening prayer, but I don't think it's as strong a custom for us as it is in Europe. Perhaps my Catholic friends will advise me more fully. In January, most of Australia is concentrating on holidays, sun, casual outdoor living and their loisirs.
However, I think that you enjoyed your cake just like Ada. Can you pop some in the freezer for us; it should last OK for 7 months !!
Je me demandais où tu étais passé Marie!
RépondreSupprimerM. Benaut I don't think many people cook/bake the galette......
So, is this the kind of cake where there's a small prize or coin which gets you the crown? You'll probably not be surprised to find out that there's a "King's Cake" in New Orleans with a little plastic baby doll symbolizing Jesus in it that figures in Epiphany celebrations there. (In New Orleans, they'll take any excuse for a celebration!)
RépondreSupprimerThe "rosca de reyes" (ring/wreath of kings) I had in Spain and South America were decorated with one or two hardboiled eggs and candied fruits. Great looking and delicious!
RépondreSupprimerAda looks Peruvian, is she?
:) Let's try both they sound scrumptious.
RépondreSupprimerFenix, Ada is French now but she was born in Mexico :-))
RépondreSupprimerEd, the little piece of china we put in those cakes (when you get it you are queen or king) are called fèves (literally "bean" because broad beans were formerly used as charms).
January 6th is Dia de Reis (Kings' Day) here in Portugal and we eat Bolo-rei!
RépondreSupprimerLoved to see bubbled New World... ;)
Have a great weekend Marie!
Epiphany is when I take down my Christmas decorations...that is about all we celebrate. The galette looks wonderful.
RépondreSupprimerHi Marie - actually on January 6 we celebrated our wedding anniversary - 29 years!!!
RépondreSupprimerHi Marie - I also take down our Christmas things on Epiphany - the 12th day of Christmas.
RépondreSupprimerI love your traditions and celebrations. The Wise Mens Crown looks beautiful and delicious.
RépondreSupprimerYour friend is very lovey too.
Tu as eu raison, je suis trop gourmande. Bizzzzzzzzzzz
RépondreSupprimerMarie, we used to celebrate ... now it's not often ... except for the tradition of having people on the streets wandering from home to home singing musics. It his called "Cantar as Janeiras" (something near to "Singing January Songs") ... as for the pastry, we have the Bolo Rei... it´s really yummy ... if you wish the recipe, let me know...
RépondreSupprimerMy wife was born in France and one o the things that she buy frequently is "Galette des rois" a I adore.

No we do not celebrate the Epiphany at all in Jamaica.
RépondreSupprimerBut I sure wish we had either one of those pastries!
Thanks Marie for your photo. As you know I grew up in Montpellier and was used to the galette picture on your photo. Noe, contrary to you, I moved upnorth, and French people were queuing in the only French baker of The Hague to get a Frangipane galette. But my childhood memories are still with the other one. If you have a nice recipee for it, please send it to me!!!!
RépondreSupprimerWe too have the galettes here. And also an invitation from the mayor to go up to the village to partake of plus a glass of wine!
RépondreSupprimerIn Catalogne we celebrates the Epiphany, and we eat the same galette des rois (Photo).
RépondreSupprimerIn the interior we have two figures the king and the "fava". The person who find de "fava" in your part pay de Galette des rois, and the person who find de king is coronaited King.
RépondreSupprimerYAY for Queen Ada! Very nice shot of her. And the food looks good. We do not celebrate Epiphany here, at least I don't know anyone who does. We have little poetic epiphanies.
