The main bookshop in Montpellier is the Librairie Sauramps. The one in the photo is the Librairie Gibert Joseph, which is part of a national group. Joseph Gibert set up his first bookshop in Paris in the 1880s. Our Gibert Joseph bookshop is located near the Hôtel de Ganges (the préfecture).
I wonder why they placed the family name before the Christian name when they chose the name of their bookshop! It is as if I decided to be called Rivet Marie, or if the "candidates" to the American presidential election were called Clinton Hillary or Obama Barack and McCain John. It would sound strange, wouldn't it?
At Gibert Joseph, they sell new books and used books (from €0.20) but they also buy the books you want to get rid of.
No need to say people spend hours before the stalls, in the sun.
There is no space left in front of the librairie Sauramps but it has a nice "branch" in the museum.
Gilbert Jeune fait très bouquiniste je trouve. J'aime chercher dans leurs grands bacs, on fait souvent de belles découvertes, de vieux livres. Et dans ces vieux livres, souvent on trouve des petits mots, et j'adore ça. Quand je vends mes livres (a force plus de place), j'aime mettre des petits mots.
RépondreSupprimerNous n'avons pas de Gilbert Jeune à Montpellier, Olivier. Juste un Gilbert Joseph. Je trouve ce nom très comique. J'ai plein de bouquins à vendre, mais chez Gibert (on dit Gibert tout court) ils les prennent vraiment pour une bouchée de pain !
RépondreSupprimerMarie, I've often found I get letters saying Bennett, Jilly in France. So often the surname comes before the first name. It surprised me at first and now I'm used to it. It's just as well Bennett is so obviously a surname.
