Frédéric Bazille was an Impressionist painter from Montpellier. He got killed in 1870 in the Franco-German war. He was 29 years old only.
The painting above, which he made in 1868, has just helped save the "valley of the river Lez." The valley is now "listed" (please let me know how I should say this in good English) and the flora and fauna will be protected.
I found the photo of the painting on Olga's gallery. I was surprised to read that hand-painted reproductions of Bazille's paintings were available on that site! The flora and fauna are protected thanks to the painting, but the painting itself is not!
Le peintre Frédéric Bazille était originaire de Montpellier. Il fut tué pendant la guerre de 1870 alors qu'il n'avait que 29 ans.
Le talbeau ci-dessus, qu'il a fait en 1868, vient de sauver la vallée du Lez, qui est maintenant classée. La faune et la flore sont protégées.
J'ai trouvé la photo du tableau sur le site "Olga's gallery". J'ai été surprise de voir qu'on pouvait commander des reproductions peintes de ce tableau et d'autres tableaux sur ce site. Autrement dit, la faune et la flore sont protégées grâce au tableau mais le tableau ne l'est pas !

It does look idyllic, that valley, and the woman in the painting looks idealized too. Perhaps the artist was a little in love with both the valley and the woman?

Très belle peinture, J'adore, Dommage que l'auteur soit disparu si tôt. Quelles belles choses ils aurait encore pu peindre pour le régal des yeux de tous.
RépondreSupprimer"Listed" is as good a word as any. You'd have to get more specific otherwise: The valley is now a national park/wildlife refuge/protected biodiversity area/etc.
