In the quarries of Junas
Last Sunday, I visited the quarries of Junas with my friend Mireille. I photographed this statue that was sculpted a few years ago to celebrate the abolishment of slavery.
Every year in July, sculptors and stone-cutters from all over the world meet in Junas and sculpt stones in the old quarries.
A jazz festival takes place in the quarries in July also.

On dirait un peu les statues de l'île de Pâques.
RépondreSupprimerThat is interesting. I wonder why they chose this spot in which to place a statue to commemorate the abolition of slavery?
RépondreSupprimerI too am always amazed at how sculptors are able to make sculptures out of nothing but a block of stone or marble or wood. It's fascinating to watch them work!
Interesting celebration.

Very beautiful. The light brings alive the deatils on the sculpture.
RépondreSupprimernice photos.
RépondreSupprimerAnn, they sculpt the stone in the quarries. They didn't choose the spot where to place the statue. They sculpted the stone where it was (don(t know whether that makes sense).
RépondreSupprimerThank you very much for your comments.
Outdoor sculpture gardens are wonderfully evocative i think...the added space around the sculpture can add so much to how you view it.
RépondreSupprimerDo they keep the statues after they all show up?
