This is the façade of a former movie theater, which is now called salle Rabelais. The main part of the building, which was built in 1908, is an amphitheater in which film festivals (such as the Festival du Film Méditerranéen and the Festival du Film Chrétien) are held every year. One can attend all kinds of lectures in the salle Rabelais, all year round (by writers, philosophers, filmmakers, politicians, etc.).
The rooster on the façade has been sculpted by a sculptor from Sète, François Acher.

There is so much beautiful detail in the stonework, when one enlarges this photo. Montpellier has so many secrets, and we are learning so much, here, about each one.

That makes me remember Pathé newsreels, in the days when you'd get a B movie and a newsreel in addition to the main attraction at the cinema. Even in England where I grew up, the newsreel would usually start with the famous Pathé rooster crowing.

RépondreSupprimerThank you, thank you for this photo. This sculputure was done by my great-grandfather, Francois Acher. According to our family research, He lived in Geneva, Switzerland until at least 1903. He was executing sculptures for the Swiss gov't. He then moved to Sete where the last of the Acher and Fraissinett families lived. He was married to Catherine Cretton, but later divorced. His daughter, and my grandmother, Berthe Acher, was born in Plainpalais and later grew up in Montpellier until 1920 where she met my grandfather, Ernest Boucher, and moved to America. How wonderful it is to have finally found something of his work. If you are aware of any other pieces, the family would love to know. Thank you again.
